GCBOA EVALUATIONS: MISSION & GUIDES
OUR MISSION
Through constructive criticism, our mission is improve each member's professionalism, knowledge of mechanics and interpretation of rules, thus ensuring the highest level of officiating for every game assigned through the Gulf Coast Basketball Officials Association.
EVALUATION COMMITTEE
The Evaluation Committee is responsible for setting up the process and selecting those individuals who will assist with the evaluation of member officials within the local officials association. Each official with two or more years experience should be evaluated at least once during each season. First-year officials should be evaluated periodically throughout the season so that mini-clinics may be offered, if necessary, to re-enforce good officiating skills.

Always strive to get one more game on your schedule, always push to better your schedule. This is where you start.
What criteria will my evaluation be based on?
What are some tips to improve the games I'm being assigned?
Assignors are looking for crew chiefs that have "IT" - so what is "IT", and who has "IT"? It means a certain kind of official:
- Physically Fit
- Career Minded/well spoken
- Crew/Team oriented - works well with others
- Rules Knowledge
- Multi-tasker
- Mental Toughness
- Knows the difference between being liked and well respected (will make the tough calls)
- Grasp/Feel for the Game
- Judgment - sees plays properly
How can I plan areas to improve upon?
Summer Focus (Referee 101)
- This is the time to work on things such as basic mechanics, floor positioning, communication (with crew and table) and your overall conditioning
Pre-Season (Referee 201)
Work to demonstrate consistency of your calls and be able to display both foul awareness and clock awareness (dependent on level of official)
In-Season (Referee 301)
- Develop an understanding on the importance for the consistency of calls as a crew. Demonstrate game management skills, sideline management and player management as well. (dependent on level of official)
What are some other areas to focus on?
We recommend reading the "Basketball Officiating Philosophy" section from your officials manual, which covers good personality characteristics such as:
- Cooperation
- Conditioning
- Courteousness
- Fair and Impartial Officiating
